Mugabe’s Legacy: From ROAPE’s Archive

On Robert Mugabe’s death in an exclusive hospital in Singapore, ROAPE makes available some of the articles that we have published on Zimbabwe over the long period of his rule. Like much of the left, we celebrated the fall of the racist white minority regime in Rhodesia in 1980. In a special issue in 1980 we cheered on Mugabe’s party in the following terms: ‘Of all the political movements in Zimbabwe, ZANU-PF stands out as the most progressive and patriotic organisation fighting for the true interests of the labouring masses’.

A Rebel in the Marxist Citadel: Tributes to Samir Amin

Samir Amin, a ROAPE contributor and comrade, died last week, we post tributes from some of his comrades, students and friends. Ray Bush, Peter Lawrence, Issa Shivji, Ndongo Sylla, John Saul and Natasha Shivji celebrate the work and life of a rebel in the Marxist citadel. As Ndongo Sylla points out, Amin's life quest was to mark out what alternative paths can lead the ‘wretched of the earth’ towards an authentic human civilisation that capitalism can only refuse them.

Voices from Dar: Interviews from ROAPE’s Workshop

In this blogpost roape.net publishes the first in a series of short interviews conducted at the ROAPE workshop held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (16-17 April, 2018). Over two days debates explored contemporary activism, resistance and research across the continent. We hope the posts on roape.net will continue the discussions started in Accra and Dar and draw in other voices.

Photo Gallery: Accra, 13-14 November 2017

ROAPE and Third World Network-Africa's workshop in Accra in November 2017 had about sixty participants, and gave us the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas in a reasonably small gathering. We believe that we are some way towards crafting a preliminary agenda for radical political economy on the continent, and drawing into the journal (and website) researchers and activists. We have included here some photos of the workshop.
