Workshops

Accra

ROAPE organised a series of three workshop on radical political economy. The first was held in Accra, 13-14 November, 2017. The second in Dar es Salaam in April 2018 and the final meeting in Johannesburg in November 2018. The workshops linked analysis and activism in contemporary Africa from the perspective of radical political economy.

ROAPE’s first workshop was held with our partners, Third World Network, in Accra, Ghana. In these videos we interview activists, trade unionist and researchers, including Peter Adejobi, Hibist Kassa, Ndongo Sylla, Sam Ashman and Josephine Alabi about the importance of the workshop, the necessity of extending the debates across the region and continent.

Connections in Dar es Salaam

ROAPE, with the Nyerere Resource Centre, held the second Connections Workshop in Dar es Salaam in April, 2018. The workshop focused on popular protests, the legacy of the Russian revolution and the Arusha declaration. The Special Issue from the workshop in Dar es Salaam, which has been published in ROAPE (Vol.  45, Issue. 158) is available for our readers to access for free. In videos from the workshop (also now available) and in the debates and discussions which took place, we attempted to chart a new direction for radical political economy in Africa.

Uprisings and Revolutions: Activists and Researchers Speak

In ROAPE’s final Connections workshop in Johannesburg in December last year we discussed the dynamics of resistance and transformation on the continent. In this blogpost we publish interviews with participants which provides an extraordinary account of the workshop and the struggles, politics and research of the activists who attended.

Creating Alliances, Making Connections

ROAPE’s Janet Bujra introduces a short film about the Connections workshops held across Africa in 2017-2018. The ROAPE workshops brought together left activists and intellectuals to debate radical transformation on the continent. In the film activists talk about the importance and relevance of these radical gatherings.
